BARRY COUNTY SCHOOL GOYERNORS.
BARRY COUNTY SCHOOL GOYERNORS. APPOINTMENT OF WELSH TEACHERS PREFER RED. PROPOSED SWIMMING BATHS FOR THE SCHOOLS. Mr. J. Lowdon, J.P., occupied the chair at a meeting of the Governors of Barry County Schools on Wednes- day last, ,there being also present, Colonel j. A. Hughes, C.B., Alder- man the Rev. I). H. Williams, M.A., Miss E. P. Hughes, -Mrs. Longdon, Mrs. Sibbering Jones, Mr. J. Mar- shall, Mr. J. R. Llewellyn, an d Mr. J, Felix Williams. In reply to the Rev. 1). H. Wil- liams' observations at the previous meeting, that preference was given to English candidates rather than Yvrelsh for posts on the teaching staff, and that the Welsh Appointments Board had been disregarded for some time when vacancies occurred, the Head- mistress (Miss C. F. Lee) pointed out that six out of ten members of the staff were Welsh. Colonel Hughes said it should not be the business of the governors to investigate the nationality of their teachers. The one thing to-day was to be British, and if the teachers were capable to do their work, the gover- nors should be satisfied. Rev. D. H. Williams I am sorry the matter has been opened. Mr. Felix Williams Has prefer- (-ti(-e been P-I\en to EnL, ] ence been given to English teachers? Rev. D. H. Williams My first: statement was that fhe. Welsh Ap- pointments Board had been over- looked; notification to the Board has .been delaved for some time. Miss Lee Mr. Silyn Roberts, secretary of the Welsh Appointments Board, told me that he received my letter four days after the date of the postmark. The matter then dropped. The Clerk (Mr. Alfred Jackson) read a letter from the Glamorgan County Council to the effect that if the governors proceeded with the erection of the biological laboratory, the Coun- cil would reimburse £ 98 of the ex- penses.—It was decided to proceed with the work at once. The governors confirmed the list of scholarships and granted renewals and internal scholarships. It was resolved to have the gym- nastic apparatus at both schools offi- cially inspected. Resolved to send a vote of appre- ciation of file services of Miss Moun- tain, who had retired from the teach- ing staff of the school after 21 vears' service. The matter was intro d uced bv Colonel Hughes-, and it was agreed to j appoint a sub-committee to consider I the question of swimming baths or the provision of swimming facilities for the schools. I
